If cork is making headway in the yachting sector, it's not just for environmental reasons. On a boat, a deck is above all a living space, and sailors are particularly sensitive to the comfort and durability of materials.
The first advantage often cited concerns thermal comfort. Whereas a teak deck can become difficult to walk on in the summer sun, cork has a more favourable thermal inertia. Its cellular structure limits the rise in temperature and reduces the sensation of burning under bare feet, a point that is far from trivial for families or long sailings in the sun or when anchored in the Mediterranean or the tropics.
Cork also stands out for its acoustic properties. Naturally damping, it attenuates vibrations and impact noise, contributing to a quieter environment on board. Without radically transforming a boat's acoustic ambience, this effect is perceptible, particularly on cruisers where overall comfort is becoming a central criterion.
